Central to the Ultrasonic Impact Technology process (UIT, often called Ultrasonic Peening) is a portable but powerful tool that delivers targeted ultrasonic frequencies - making metal harder and more corrosion resistant while extending its usable life. Our technology has been employed in some of the world's strongest industries - including oil and gas, infrastructure, defense and transportation.
Ultrasonic impact technology (UIT) was developed to strengthen the hulls of nuclear submarines. Using this treatment we are able to alter and strengthen the grain structure of a range of metals - including steel, aluminum, titanium, iron and bronze.
At the core of this UIT/Ultrasonic Peening technology is a series of patented free-floating pins which come in contact with the surface of the material being treated and cause stain hardening of the metal.
During impact, the metal surface conforms to the shape of the pins, allowing them to acoustically couple the transducer with the metal being treated while resonating both at a single frequency. When this occurs, the ultrasonic energy traveling from the transducer through the pins into the metal creates changes in the size, shape and orientation of the grains that form the structure of the metal. Following treatment, beneficial compressive stresses are created near the surface and detrimental tensile stresses are relieved to a depth of 12mm.
